SLATTON, CHARLES STEWART (1895~1951) Charles Stewart Slatton was born March 13, 1895 to J.M. Slatton in Scranton, Eastland County, Texas. He attended the Scranton Academy and Stamford College in West Texas.
He served overseas in World War I for a year, then came back and attended the University of Texas law school, receiving his degree there. He studied at the Cumberland University in Cumberland, Tennessee, then returned to Texas to begin his practice in Jourdanton, Atascosa County, Texas, in 1923. His first office was that of county attorney there, one which he held for two years.
He was then elected district attorney of the 81st judicial district and later re-elected without opposition for two more terms. In 1930, Slatton moved to San Antonio and engaged in the general practice of law until 1937 when he was appointed associate justice of the Fourth Court of Civil Appeals by Governor James Allred. He was re-elected without opposition.
The Supreme Court of Texas appointed him Judge on the Commission of Appeals, January 1, 1940, and he remained in that capacity until becoming associate justice of the Supreme Court of Texas in 1945. He succeeded the late Judge John H. Bickett, Jr. as counsel to the Southwestern Bell Telephone Company.
Slatton formerly resided on a farm near Austin and raised livestock in his spare time. He was a member of the American Hereford Breeder's Association. He belonged to the Highland Park Methodist Church, Masonic bodies, the American Legion and the Red Cross, and was a member of the City Club and the Dallas Country Club.
Slatton died from a heart attack on February 23, 1951, in Dallas, Texas and was buried at the Texas State Cemetery.
