LUCIO, EDDIE, III

The following biographical sketch was taken from Rep. Lucio’s Texas House of Representatives webpage, www.house.state.tx.us. 

Representative Eddie Lucio III was born and raised in Brownsville, Texas, where he practices law and lives with his family. He attended Texas Tech University on an athletic scholarship and later received a B.B.A. from the University of Texas at Austin. In 2005, he received his Doctorate of Jurisprudence from the University of Texas School of Law.

In 2006, Lucio was elected to the Texas House of Representatives, District 38, and was overwhelmingly re-elected in 2008. District 38 is composed of the southwest region of Cameron County.

During his second session in the Legislature, Rep. Lucio worked diligently to attain passage of significant legislation that not only benefits his district and the Rio Grande Valley, but the entire State of Texas, while serving on prestigious committees. His accomplishments pertain to areas that are extremely essential to the development and long-term interests of South Texas, including: the push for a medical school in South Texas, establishing the Medicaid Buy-In Program, expanding insurance coverage for children with autism, providing college credit for military service and raising the efficiency standards for vehicles purchased by the state.

As a member of the Natural Resources Committee, Rep. Lucio supported legislation that aims to ensure the future of our state's water supply, while making sure our land and water sources are used and developed responsibly. Serving on the State Affairs Committee, he had the opportunity to fight hard for a more effective administration of our state government and sought sensible consumer protections from our state's energy and telecommunications industries. As Vice Chairman of the influential Calendars Committee, he was able to deliver on important legislation that brings a positive impact throughout the state.

During the 81st Legislative Session, Rep. Lucio was instrumental in acquiring critical funding for teacher and state employee pay raises, securing $264 million in additional funding for higher education financial aid, as well as increased funding to address the nursing shortage across Texas. He also worked to bring $6.5 million in funding for the Regional Academic Health Science Center expansion plan and $6 million in funding for the Texas Diabetes Council/Stark Diabetes Center, which provides healthcare and nutritional education to residents in the Rio Grande Valley.

Through his work and with the support of his constituents, Rep. Lucio is extremely humbled by the faith and support of the people of District 38 and is committed to continue to bring about real progress for the Rio Grande Valley.

Rep. Lucio is an attorney in South Texas. He is the son of State Senator & Mrs. Eddie Lucio, Jr., and is married to Jaime Barrera Lucio of Brownsville. He and his wife welcomed their first child, Olivia Rose, in August of 2009.
