CAVEN, WALTER THOMAS (1920 ~ 2007). The following is a family-placed obituary for Walter Thomas Caven, former member of the Texas House of Representatives. The obituary was provided by Weed - Corley - Fish Funeral Home.

"Walter Thomas Caven, 86, died on March 13, 2007. He was born in Marshall, Texas on November 23, 1920 to William Caven and Ella Sedberry Caven. He was educated in Marshall public schools, graduating from Marshall High School in 1937 as president of his Senior Class and of the National Honor Society. After graduating in 1941 from the University of Texas, Plan II, he entered law school. Following Pearl Harbor, he postponed his education to enlist in WW II, where he became a 7th Division infantry platoon leader. During the battle of Leyte Gulf he was wounded in action on November 15, 1944. For his service, he received the Silver Star, Purple Heart and Bronze Star.

After the war he returned to UT where he graduated from UT law school in 1947. After election to the House of Representatives from Harrison County, Walter served in the Texas Legislature in 1949. He practiced law for 33 years representing 21 railroad companies in the Texas Railroad Association. Upon retirement from the railroads, he became of counsel to the law firm of Akin, Gump, Strauss, Hauer and Feld for eight years.

Walter had a big and generous heart and he touched many lives. He lived life large, loved golf, hunting, Texas football, his place in the country, and his many friends and family.

He is survived by his wife of 56 years Laura Caven, daughter Caroline Caven, son Tom Caven and his wife Marsha, grandchildren Caitlin and Andrew Caven, all of Austin, sister Jean Hyde of Marshall, and numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews.

The family will receive friends from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, March 15, 2007 at Weed-Corley-Fish Funeral Home.

A memorial service will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Friday, March 16, 2007, at the Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd, 3201 Windsor Road. Private family burial will be held at Texas State Cemetery.

The family requests memorial contributions be made in Walter's memory to Austin Community Foundation, P.O. Box 5159, Austin, TX. 78763, or to the Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd, 3201 Windsor Rd., Austin, TX 78703."
