WILLIAMS, THOMAS (1843-1873) Thomas Williams was born about 1844 in Taney County, Missouri (age calculated from census records- age in 1850 was 6; age in 1860 was 15; age in 1870 was 26). Place of birth found on enlistment records for Cival War Service. Parents of Thomas were Enoch and Emaline Howard Williams. The family moved to Caldwell County, Texas, about 1847-48, when Thomas was quite young. Enoch was a millwright and operated a grist mill in the county and also farmed. Enoch was a strong Union man and following the Civil War returned with a part of his family to Newton County, Missouri in 1867.

Thomas Williams enlisted in Co. B, 1st Cavalry Volunteers (U.S.) at Carrolton, Louisianna on March 30, 1863. He attained the rank of 2nd Lt. during the war. Physical description of Thomas at time of enlistment was as follows: Born- Taney Co., Mo; age- 20 occupation- stock raiser; enlisted 30 Mar 1863, Carrolton, La; Blue eyes, brown hair, fair complexion, 6 foot, 1 inch tall.

About 1867 Thomas married Martha "Mattie" G. Elgin, daughter of Lewis and Elizabeth Elgin. Daughter Laura E. Williams was born in 1869. In 1868 Thomas was appointed and served as County Clerk for Caldwell County. In 1869, Thomas was mentioned in the DAILY AUSTIN REPUBLICAN of 16 Apr 1869, as an Assistant Assessor Internal Revenue, 2nd Division, 3rd District of Texas.

On Dec. 26, 1870, wife Mattie G. Williams died and was buried in Lockhart City Cemetery (Apr, 1846 - Dec 26, 1870 ) Thomas Williams married Elizabeth " Lizzie" Baker in Lockhart on Dec. 6, 1871.

Lizzie was born April 23, 1852, in Greene county, Tennessee, and was the daughter of Thomas H. and Margaret S. Baker. Thomas H. Baker was a Satate Senator during the 12th and 13th legilatures, served as County Judge of Caldwell county in 1867, served as Sub-Assistant Commissioner for Caldwell and Hays Counties for the Freedman's Bureau, and after moving from Caldwell County , he served as postmaster of McGregor, McLennan County, Texas, in 1882. In 1872 Thomas Williams served as president of the Board of School Directors of Caldwell County. Williams enlisted in the State Police and then resigned from the Police in 1872 to run for the position State Representative for Caldwell, Gonzales, and Guadalupe counties. He was defeated by John Ireland in this election.

He re-enlisted into the State Police and was killed in Lampasas, Texas. Shortly thereafter, he was reinterred in the State Cemetery in Austin in 1873.
