SMITH, JACKSON BARKELY (1920 ~ 2010). The following is an obituary published for Justice Jackson B. Smith.  The obituary appeared in the Houston Chronicle on September 2, 2010.

"Jackson B. Smith, Jr. was born on June 14, 1920 and passed away August 30, 2010. He was a native Houstonian and 5th generation Texan.  He's survived by his beloved wife Myrtle Scheidemantel; sons Barkley, Louis, Kevin; daughter Stephanie Alison; 10 grandchildren and brother Judge Shearn Smith.

He served in the Army Airforce in World War II in many capacities including B-29 pilot in the Pacific Theater and a Squadron Commander, retiring as a Major.  Post War he attended and graduated from University of Houston Law School in 1950.  In 1962 he was elected Judge of The Harris County Probate Court.  He served as Judge of the Domestic Relations Court No 5, 189th District Court and as Justice for the Texas First Court of Appeals.  Retired Justice Smith served in 10 of Texas' 14 Courts of Appeals as well as all Trial Level Courts. 

During his life he was active in his church and in Masonic work. He was a Past Master of Gray Lodge 329, a 33rd Degree Scottish Rite Mason, and a Shriner.

Pallbears will be his sons Barkley, Louis, and Kevin and grandsons Bart, Philip, Jack, Daniel and Nathan. Honorary pall bearers are Justice Murry Cohen, Justice Charles Seymore, Justice Terry Jennings, Eileen Wilson and Kathy Smith.

Visitation is Thursday Sept. 2nd at Forest Park Lawndale 5-8 pm.  Funeral service conducted by Rev. Ray Holt at 10am Friday, Memorial Drive Presbyterian Church.  Graveside services follow at the Texas State Cemetery in Austin at 3pm.  In lieu of flowers please donate to The University of Houston Foundation for the Honorable Jackson B. Smith, Jr. Scholarship Endowment at U of H Foundation, 4543 Post Oak Place #250, Houston, TX 77027."
