POERNER, JO ANN NEY (1933 ~ 2019). The following is an obituary for Jo Ann Ney Poerner, spouse of former Texas House Member and Texas Railroad Commissioner John Henry Poerner. The obituary was provided by Tondre-Guinn Funeral Home of Castroville.
Jo Ann Ney Poerner, surrounded by family, went to be with her Lord and Savior on November 27, 2019 in Castroville, Texas. She was born in Hondo, Texas, on March 10, 1933, the second of the six children of Herman and Agnes Rothe Ney.
She graduated from D’Hanis High School in 1951 and Draughon’s Business College of San Antonio.
A loyal and devoted wife of 66 years to her husband, John H. Poerner, she provided him love, companionship, and wise counsel. Jo Ann was a devoted mother who raised five daughters including a special needs child.
Jo Ann supported all her children’s endeavors from music to sports. When her children were grown, she passed on knowledge to eleven grandchildren, seeing them through to adulthood. Late in life, she was a loving great-grandmother to eleven great-grandchildren.
A devoutly religious Catholic woman, she was bestowed the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulcher for her support of the Church. Throughout her life, she remained a steadfast supporter of various church communities and clergy. A lifelong homemaker, she excelled at sewing, baking, bookkeeping, and helped found the D’Hanis-Hondo Rook Club.
Jo Ann is preceded in death by her parents; her daughter, Margaret Agnes Poerner and an infant daughter, Mary Poerner; her sister, Beatrice Ney Koch; brothers, John Ney and James Ney; and brother-in-law, John Gilhooly.
She is survived by her husband, John H. Poerner of Castroville, her daughters, Donna (Terry) Mechler of New Braunfels, Lucy (John) Needham of Austin, Cathy (Ray) Supak of Houston, Sarah (Christopher) Hahn of Round Rock; grandchildren: Lauren (Dr. Elijah) Bolin, Grayson Mechler, Garrett (Becca) Mechler, Christen (Rev. Christopher) Colquitt, Joshua Needham, Jordan (Hannah) Needham, Amanda (Brandon Frederick) Supak, Rev. Cameron Supak, Reagan Hahn, Rachel Hahn, and August Hahn; eleven great-grandchildren; sister, Mary Ney Gilhooly of Dallas; brother, Tom (Margie) Ney of D’Hanis; brother-in-law, Matt Koch of D’Hanis; sister-in-law, Margaret Ney of San Antonio; as well as numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives.
Visitation will be on Thursday, December 5, from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm, at Tondre-Guinn Funeral Home, 1016 Lorenzo Street, Castroville, Texas 78009.
The Holy Rosary will be recited on Friday, December 6, at 9:30 am., immediately followed by the Mass of the Resurrection, at 10:00 am, both at St. Louis Catholic Church, 1306 Angelo Street, Castroville, Texas 78009.
Private Interment will be held in the afternoon at the Texas State Cemetery in Austin, Texas.
