GRAMM, WENDY LEE (1945 ~ ). Wendy Lee Gramm was born in Hawaii on January 10, 1945. Dr. Gramm, the wife of United States Senator William Philip "Phil" Gramm, received her Bachelor of Arts degree from Wellesley College in 1966 and a Ph.D. from Northwestern University in 1971.

Dr. Gramm started her economics career in 1969 at Texas A & M University, where she met her future husband. In 1970, she and Gramm were married. They have two sons. Dr. Gramm was promoted to Associate Professor in 1974 and also served as the Department's Director of Undergraduate Programs. In all, Dr. Gramm taught economics at Texas A & M for more than eight years and has published articles in the American Economic Review and the Journal of Law and Economics.

After Gramm took his seat in the United States Senate, in 1984, Dr. Gramm served as the Executive Director of the Presidential Task Force on Regulatory Relief and as Director of the Federal Trade Commission's Bureau of Economics. From 1985 to 1988, Dr. Gramm was administrator for Information and Regulatory Affairs at the Office of Management and Budget. In 1988, President Ronald Reagan named her chairman of the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC), a position she held until 1993.

After leaving the CFTC, Dr. Gramm accepted directorships on the boards of several corporations, including Enron, Iowa Beef Processors, Invesco Funds, Longitude, State Farm Insurance Companies and Independent Women's Forum. She also served on the National Advisory Board of the National Federation of Independent Business' Legal Foundation.

Currently, Dr. Gramm is a Distinguished Senior Fellow and Director of the Regulatory Studies Program of the Mercatus Center at George Mason University in Virginia.

In February 2001, Texas Governor Rick Perry appointed Dr. Gramm to the Texas A & M University Board of Regents, where she is a member of the Committee on Audit and the Committee on Academic and Student Affairs.
