MCCLOUD, AUSTIN O. (1929 ~ ). Austin O. McCloud was born on March 17, 1929. He received his Bachelor of Business Administration from Texas Tech University in 1951. After serving his country during the Korean War, he received his Bachlor of Laws degree cum laude from Baylor University in 1957.

He was an associate with the law firm of Fulbright, Crooker, Freeman, Bates, and Jaworski in Houston. In 1960 he set up a law practice in Colorado City. He was appointed to the 32nd District Court of Texas as Judge on August 31, 1963. Judge McCloud was elected to serve as Judge of the 32nd District Court in November of 1964 and in November of 1968 and served in that capacity through December of 1970. He was then elected as Chief Justice of the Court of Appeals, 11th District of Texas in November of 1970, November of 1976, November of 1982, and November of 1988 and served in that capacity until his retirement on December 31, 1994.

After retirement he has served as a senior appellate judge subject to assignment by the Chief Justice of the Texas Supreme Court to the Texas Court of Appeals. He is a member of the Real Property Drafting Committee of the National Conference of Bar Examiners. This five-person committee drafts the real property questions that are included on the multistate bar examination.

Judge McCloud was named outstanding Jurist of Texas, 1994; served as President, Council of Chief Judges of Courts of Appeals of the United States, 1993-1994; President, Council of Chief Justices of Texas Courts of Appeals, 1991; and President, Baylor Law School Alumni Association, 1975-1976.

He was appointed by the Council of Chief Justices of Texas Courts of Appeals to serve as ex-officio member of the Texas Supreme Court Rules Advisory Committee; named by the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals as a member of the original advisory committee on Texas rules of post-trial and appellate procedure in criminal cases; served on the committee for the adoption of rules of civil and criminal evidence; selected by the Texas Supreme Court and Court of Criminal Appeals to serve on the committee to harmonize appellate rules of civil and criminal procedure; represented the Council of Chief Judges of Courts of Appeals of U.S. at first joint meeting of federal and state judges sponsored by the State Judicial Institute; member of the State Appellate Rules Committee, the Appellate Practice and Advocacy Section, State Bar of Texas.

Both Judge and Mrs. McCloud have long been active workers in the Methodist church. They are the parents of two daughters, Melinda Musselman (Mrs. Henry) and Sharon Burgher (Mrs. David). They are loving grandparents to Louisa Musselman, Luke Musselman, Molly Musselman, Mary Peyton Burgher, Nancy Burgher, and David Burgher, III.
