MAXEY, TOMMY GLEN (1952 ~ ). A former school teacher, legislative aide, civil rights lobbyist, and long time community activist - Glen Maxey represents southeast Austin and Travis County in the Texas House of Representatives.
First elected in 1991, Representative Maxey is now in his fifth term in office. He is the Vice-Chair of the House Human Services Committee and serves on the House Public Health Committee and the House Administration Committee.
In 1999, during the 76th Legislative Session, Representative Maxey was the author of over one hundred bills. Representative Maxey took the lead on several important issues: expanding the Children's Health Insurance Program (CHIP) to cover up to 200% of poverty for children ages 0-19, the creation of an education and prevention program for Hepatitis C, the reduction of air pollution and the promotion of better air quality by helping to close the loophole for grand fathered non-permitted industrial polluters, and increasing public access to information via the Internet, including making profiles of medical doctors available to the public.
A recognized leader on public health and human services issues, Representative Maxey has been honored and recognized throughout his community and the state for his public service. Representative Maxey has been the recipient of Legislator Of The Year awards and Legislative Excellence awards between 1993-1999 given by various organizations including: Common Cause, Coalition of Texans with Disabilities, United Cerebral Palsy of Texas, Texas Physical Therapy Association, Brain Injury Association of Texas and the Lesbian/Gay Rights Lobby. He has also been the recipient of various other awards including the Texas Outstanding Public Service Award, presented jointly by Consumers Union, Public Citizen Action, Texas Consumers Association, and the Gray Panthers. Representative Maxey was also a two-time winner of the Legislative Service Award from the Sierra Club and has demonstrated his commitment to law enforcement by being given two awards from the Austin Police Department. Representative Maxey has been voted "Best Legislator" in the Austin Chronicle's, "Reader's Poll" on four occasions and has been given honorable mention in Texas Monthly's, "Best Legislators" issue in 1997 and 1999.
A native of Baytown, Texas, Representative Maxey holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Social Rehabilitation and Social Services and a Master of Education degree in Elementary Education and Clinical Reading from Sam Houston State University.
Prior to his election, Representative Maxey was a fifth-grade teacher in Navasota, Texas; a legislative aide to two state senators; involved in local, state, and national political campaigns; executive director of the Lesbian/Gay Rights Lobby of Texas and a founder of AIDS Services of Austin and the Texas AIDS Network.
