UNDERHILL, BESSIE GAINES LIPSCOMB (1846~1910) Bessie Gaines Lipscomb Underhill, wife of S. E. M. Underhill and granddaughter of State Supreme Court Justice Abner Lipscomb, was born on October 18, 1846, in Gay Hill, Texas, to William Bibb and Elizabeth (Hunt) Lipscomb. Her husband, Stephen Edward Monaghan Underhill, was a Confederate Colonel.

After moving to Austin in 1898, Underhill died on August 8, 1910, at her daughter's home. She was buried the Texas State Cemetery, next to her husband, two days later.
