BURKS, J. L. (1829 ~ 1909). Confederate veteran J.L. Burks was born in Tennessee in 1829.
During the Civil War he belonged to Company F, 35th Texas Cavalry. There were two designations for the 35th Texas Cavalry. One was Brown's and the other was Liken's 35th Texas Cavalry. The Confederate War Department made an error in designating both of the units with the same number; the error was never changed.
Burks served under Captain John Wiggins of Liken's Cavalry. Liken's 35th was formed with the consolidation of Burns' Texas Cavalry. Like Brown's 35th, Liken's 35th also formed in late 1863. Liken's 35th saw action at the Red River Campaign, Mansfield, and Pleasant Hill.
Burks moved to Texas in 1849, and lived in Cherokee County and Rusk County where he was a Christian. He was a widowed farmer when he filed for admission to the Confederate Men's Home. He was admitted twice to the Home.
He was first admitted on August 6, 1907. He was released at his own request on June 29, 1908 but was readmitted on June 30, 1909. Burks died at the Home on October 26, 1909 and he was buried at the Texas State Cemetery.
