QUIMBY, JOAN MARIE HARVISON (1937~) Joan Marie Harvison Quimby, wife of William Harry "Bill" Quimby, who was born in Mobile, Alabama, on October 6, 1937, was the oldest of five children of the late Rev. Magee M., a Baptist minister, and Nannie Lou McNeil Harvison, a teacher. During her childhood years, she lived at various times in Texas, Oklahoma, Alabama and Louisiana, ultimately returning with her family to Mobile, where she graduated from Murphy High School and was recipient of the highest award in English. She graduated with a B. S. degree in English and fine arts education from Louisiana State University in 1960.

After teaching art for two years in the Dallas Independent School District, she left to pursue a master's degree in theology and religious education at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Fort Worth, where both of her parents had studied. She also studied music, including advanced studies in piano. Also at Southwestern Seminary, she worked in the public relations office, writing news articles and designing collateral materials for the school. She was subsequently hired to work in public relations for the Baptist General Convention of Oklahoma, headquartered in Oklahoma City, and served five years as the organization's director of communications. Her work in this capacity won numerous writing awards.

She left denominational work to become a staff writer for The Daily Oklahoman and associate editor of the newspaper's Sunday magazine. She moved to Dallas to work with The Dallas Morning News and was hired shortly afterward as a writer for a prominent political consultant, Mabel Duke, who remained a close friend until her death. Mrs. Quimby worked in several editorial and public relations jobs in Dallas, serving as editor of the Texas Society of CPA's monthly membership publication, real estate writer and editor for The Dallas Times Herald, director of publications for the Dallas Symphony Association, and later as public relations director for Trailways. She married William H. Quimby in 1976, and was a devoted companion through years which included accompanying him to most meetings related to his longtime service on Texas state boards, especially after he became disabled.

She started her own free-lance writing, designing and consulting business in 1980, and was a contributing writer for business and home design magazines. She continued her free-lance work on a full time basis until 1993, when she went to work as a copyeditor at Tracy-Locke Advertising (now TLPartnership). She continued to work on a limited basis with several longtime clients of her public relations business.

She enjoyed an avid interest in photography, and this interest often focused on favorite things in her life - her two cats, flowers and family gatherings.
