QUIMBY, WILLIAM HARRY (1930~2005) William Harry "Bill" Quimby, state official, was born September 18, 1930, in Littleton, New Hampshire. He was the only child of Dr. Neal Quimby, prominent educator in the field of visually handicapped children, and his wife Celia. Bill Quimby spent his childhood years in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and graduated from high school in Alamogordo, New Mexico. He received his BBA degree from Stanford University.
The major part of Mr. Quimby's professional life was in chamber of commerce and association management. After serving a year as tax assessor for Pecos County, he became manager of the Fort Stockton Chamber of Commerce. He subsequently served as Chamber of Commerce manager in Colorado City and Big Spring. Later, as general manager of the Fort Worth Chamber of Commerce from 1961 to 1963, his responsibilities included organizing a breakfast event attended by the late President John F. Kennedy and his wife Jackie in Fort Worth on November 22, 1963 - a historic event followed by the president's assassination in Dallas. From 1964 to 1976, Mr. Quimby served as executive director to the Texas Society of CPAs. He was an honorary member of the Texas Society of CPAs as well as the Dallas Chapter of TSCPA. Following his 12-year tenure with the TSCPA, Bill served as administrator for several large Dallas law firms. He was president of the Dallas Chapter of the Association of Legal Administrators, vice president at the national level of ALA and first chairman of the ALA Foundation.
Disability due to complication of diabetes led to his retirement in 1988, but he remained active on professional boards and committees. For 11 years he was a member of the Texas State Board of Public Accountancy, having first been appointed in 1981 to a six-year term by Governor William P. Clements, Jr., and later to fill the unexpired five-year term of a board member who resigned. As secretary, he was a member of the board's executive committee and served on several committees. He was chairman of the continuing professional education committee of the National Association of State Boards of Accountancy. When Bill's term expired on the Texas Public Accountancy board, Governor Ann Richards appointed him to the Texas State Polygraph Examiners Board. He was twice elected chairman of the board.
Mr. Quimby maintained a lifetime interest in reading and baseball. He was a fan of the Texas Rangers, beginning with the team's inaugural season in Dallas, and was a member and coordinator of a season ticket partnership of close friends for several years. He married his wife Joan in 1976.
Bill Quimby passed away on August 31, 2005, in Dallas, Texas, and was buried at the Texas State Cemetery four days later.
