NASH, DOROTHY MOORE (1927 ~ 2017). The following is an obituary for Dorothy Moore Nash, former member of the Texas Commission on the Arts and Humanities. The obituary was provided by Weed, Corley, Fish Funeral Home of Austin.
Dorothy Ruth Moore Nash died peacefully on February 15, 2017. A loving wife, mother of two, grandmother of five, great-grandmother of twelve, and a friend of many. She lived a full and blessed life. Most of all, she will be remembered for her love of family and friends.
Dorothy was born in Temple, Texas on January 1, 1927, the second of two children, to William Lockhart (Bill) and Hazel Jones Moore.
When Dorothy was five years old the family moved to Austin. She attended Pease Elementary and Allan Jr High, graduating from Stephen F. Austin High School (Rio Grande campus). She attended the University of Texas and was a member of Delta Delta Delta sorority establishing lifelong friendships.
After a short courtship on May 17, 1947 she joined Lt. Charles Durham Nash in holy matrimony at the First Methodist Church in Austin. After a honeymoon to California, they lived the rest of their lives within two blocks of where they were raised. They were married 63 years before his death in 2011.
Dorothy owned a yellow Plymouth convertible when they married. Charles working at the Chevrolet dealership, would not let Dorothy park the car overnight at their house. So she was required to park it back at her parents' house and pick it up in the morning. Eventually Dorothy sold the Plymouth and used the proceeds to purchase a lot to build their home and raise their two children – Nancy Lucille and Charles Durham Jr., where she resided until her death.
Dorothy devotedly supported Charles' career in the automotive industry. Charles' father had started the family business, Capitol Chevrolet in 1935, and Charles continued the family legacy until his death in 2011. Both of their children are still active in the car business.
Dorothy and Charles enjoyed traveling all over the world. They were inseparable and loved antiquing any place they visited. They would also often be found playing bridge with friends. Dorothy continued playing bridge on her IPad or with her bridge group. She also enjoyed her once a month get together with her Austin High "Lunch Bunch".
She was appointed by then Governor Dolph Briscoe to the Texas Commission of the Arts and Humanities from 1975-1981. Dorothy was also active in various organizations including the Junior League of Austin, and the Settlement Home for Children. She was a member of Texas Exes (life member), University of Texas Chancellor's Council, Headliners Club, Tarry House, the Argyle Club of San Antonio, honorary member Admiral's Club, and Tarrytown United Methodist Church.
Dorothy, affectionately known as "Dita", leaves behind her loving children; Nancy Lucille Nash Harper and Charles Durham Nash, Jr. (Chuck) of San Marcos, Texas, and wife, Elizabeth. She will be deeply missed by her grandchildren: T. Harper and wife, Taylor, Will Harper and wife Mary, Anne Nash Davies and husband Jarrett, Katherine Nash Goehring and husband Jody, and Caroline Nash Smith and husband Brian, along with twelve great grandchildren; twin boys Tommy and Ferrell Harper, Flora and Lucy Harper, Ashton, Chase, and Will Davies, Jack, Nash, and Elle Goehring, and Niley and Marianne Smith, her sister-in-law Virginia Nail Moore, along with her numerous nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her parents, Hazel and Bill Moore, husband Charles Durham Nash, and brother William Lockhart (Bill) Moore, Jr.
Many thanks for the wonderful care provided to Dorothy by Seton Hospital and St. David's Hospital, during her short stay. A very warm thank you to Dr. Robert Clements, Dr. Bill Ramsdale, Dr. John Marietta, Dr. Sarah Smiley, and Dr. Anna Vu – all of whom when out of their way to watch over Dorothy. Sincere appreciation is due to Adriana, along with Adele, and Paul for keeping Dorothy safe and comfortable these last few months.
After being a lifelong member of First United Methodist Church, Dorothy and Charles became devoted members of the Tarrytown United Methodist Church where a memorial service and celebration of Dorothy's life will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Friday, February 17th. A private burial will be held at the Texas State Cemetery.

We will all miss Dita … and know that she will live in our hearts forever.
