COYLE, JAMES (1836 ~ 1908). James Coyle, Confederate veteran, was born in Ireland in 1836. After immigrating to the United States, he served in Company C, 14th Louisiana Regiment, and Company C, 23rd Virginia Cavalry, during the Civil War. The 23rd Virginia Cavalry was formed when the 41st Cavalry Battalion, two companies of O'Ferrall's Cavalry and one independent unit consolidated in April 1864. The 23rd participated in minor battles most notably the Lynchburg Campaign.

Coyle moved to Texas in April 1866, and lived in Galveston, Galveston County, where he was a member of the Catholic Church. He worked as a laborer and barkeeper. After moving to the Confederate Men's Home in Austin, he died on October 5, 1908 and was buried at the Texas State Cemetery.
