In 1871, McGhee, a dentist, migrated to Texas and settled in Dallas. Suffering from the effects of age, he moved to Austin on April 2, 1898, to live in the Confederate Men's Home. After living in Austin for nearly two years, he died on February 22, 1900, and was buried in the Texas State Cemetery.

Upon entering the Home, McGhee listed that he was a widower. His wife's name is not currently known. Upon his death, he wished that a Mrs. Lizzie Ward, of Dallas, be notified. It is possible that Mrs. Ward was a daughter.
