MCALLISTER, J. H. (1820 ~ 1899). J. H. McAllister, Confederate veteran, was born in Virginia in 1820. With the outbreak of the Civil War, he enlisted in the Confederate Army and fought in Company A of Waller's Battalion in Watt's Regiment.
Circa 1874, McAllister moved to Texas and eventually settled in Dallas, where he worked as a merchant. After suffering from a broken knee, he moved to Austin on May 22, 1895, to live in the Confederate Men's Home. He stayed in the Home until his death on December 17, 1899. He was later buried in the Texas State Cemetery.
Upon entering the Home, McAllister wished to notify Mr. W. H. Lyed, of Dallas, upon his death. The Home complied with McAllister's wishes, but the letter to Mr. Lyed was returned.
