STILLWELL, ANDREW W. (1818 ~ 1899). Confederate veteran Andrew W. Stillwell was born in New York in 1818, and moved to the Republic of Texas in 1845, and worked as a stone mason.

With the outbreak of the Civil War, Stillwell enlisted in the Confederate Army on February 10, 1862, in Bee County. He was mustered into Captain Martin M. Kenney's Company of the 1st Regiment, Carter's Brigade, Texas Mounted Volunteers, which later became Company K of the 21st Texas Cavalry, which was also known as the 1st Texas Lancers.

The 21st Cavalry served in the Trans-Mississippi Department and was active in Marmaduke's Missouri Raid and took part in skirmishes in Louisiana. The unit also fought in Arkansas and disbanded before the Confederate surrender in June, 1865.

After the War, Stillwell, a Baptist who never married, returned to Texas and settled in Atascosa County. Suffering from a crippled leg, he moved to Austin to live in the Confederate Men's Home on January 17, 1893. He remained there until his death on June 26, 1899. He was buried in the Texas State Cemetery.

The only correspondent he listed on the Home Roster was a F. N. Poteet, who also lived in Atascosa, County.
