SCRUGGS, JOHN (? ~1898) John Scruggs was a private in the Texas National Guard, Houston Light Guard. While in Austin at Camp Mabry, Private Scruggs was taken sick with typhoid fever. Kept at the Camp Mabry hospital for several days, he was moved to the city hospital where he passed away on May 20 or 21, 1898. Private Scruggs was given a full military burial and laid to rest in the Texas State Cemetery on May 21, 1898. Information taken from Austin Daily Statesman obituary, Sunday, May 22, 1898.
