Mary Isabel Riddle Caven

CAVEN, MARY ISABEL RIDDLE (1913 ~ 2010). The following is an obituary for Mary Caven, spouse of former Texas House Member Hubbard Scott Caven. The obituary was published in the May 28, 2010 edition of the Austin American Statesman.

Mary Isabel Riddle Caven slipped peacefully into Eternity on May 24, 2010 and into the welcoming arms of her husband and grandsons who preceded her. Isabel was born on July 25, 1913 in Henrietta, Texas, the fourth child and youngest daughter of W.C. and Jennie Lee Thomas Riddle. The family moved to Durant, Oklahoma where Isabel attended high school and graduated from Southeastern Oklahoma Teachers College. Her first teaching job was in Elysian Fields, Texas, near Marshall, where she met her future husband, Hubbard Scott Caven. They married on January 2, 1935. The Cavens lived in Marshall until 1955, when they moved to Houston, and finally to Austin in 1963. Isabel was a long-time member of Tarrytown United Methodist Church. Isabel was preceded in death by Hubbard and by both of her grandsons, Joseph Ramsey Bienvenu, IV and Hubbard Scott Caven, III. She is survived by her sister, Sibyl Riddle Loyd of Dallas, son H. Scott Caven, Jr. and wife Vivien of Houston, daughter Mary Gay Caven Merritt and husband Alan of Dripping Springs, granddaughters Kristin Bienvenu of Dallas, Lindsey Caven Majors and husband Will of Austin, and Jennie Vivien Caven of Houston, grandson Preston Broadfoot and wife Anastasia of Austin, great- grandchildren Trevor and Taylor Bienvenu and their mother, Georgette Bienvenu of Dripping Springs, as well as her closest friends, Etta McKnight and Jan Brown. A private family burial was held at Texas State Cemetery on Thursday, May 27th, 2010 officiated by Barry Fulton of Tarrytown United Methodist Church. The family requests that memorial contributions be made in Isabel's memory to the charity of your choice.
