LEONARD, MARCIA FAE (1939 ~ 2009). The following is an obituary for Marcia Fae Leonard, daughter of Homer Leonard, former speaker of the House of Representatives. The obituary was provided by Weed, Corley, Fish Funeral Home.
"Marcia Fae Leonard, beloved daughter of Nona and Homer Leonard and a 50 year resident of the Austin State School, was reunited with her loving parents on the evening of June 14, 2009.
Marcia lived in her parents' home in Tarrytown for the first 18 years of her life. She was a true West Austinite. Marcia loved Holiday House hamburgers and missed having that special treat for the past few years.
Marcia's father Homer Leonard, a former Speaker of the Texas House of Representatives, was a dedicated supporter of the Austin State School, as was Marcia's mother Nona. Along with Bess and Herman Jones, Pinky and John McKetta, and other faithful volunteers and contributors, Marcia's parents were instrumental in securing funding for the cottages, the Chapel for the Children, the lighted sports field, and the swimming pool enjoyed by Austin State School residents. Marcia and her fellow residents have enjoyed happier, healthier, safer, and more comfortable lives because of their generosity. Marcia's family is especially grateful for the care given to Marcia by the wonderful staff at the Austin State School during her years there and by the doctors and the nurses at Seton Hospital during her final illness.
Marcia's parents preceded her in death. Marcia is survived by her sister Barbara Leonard Smith and husband Alden B. Smith; her nephew Leonard B. Smith, his wife Janis, and their children; her nephew Mark S. Smith, his wife Traci, and their children; and her nephew Lamar P. Smith and his wife Michaele.
A private burial was held at the State Cemetery on June 17, 2009, where, by Special Act of the Texas Legislature, Marcia was interred with her parents.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Austin State School Parents Association, P. O. Box 1269, Austin, TX 78767-9944.
