MOREHEAD, JUDITH ENGLISH (1914 ~ 2006). The following is an obituary for Judith English Morehead, spouse of Richard A. Morehaed. The obituary was provided by Weed, Corley, Fish Funeral Home.

"Judith English Morehead, of Austin, passed away on Tuesday, November 14, 2006 at the Christopher House of Hospice Austin. In September she had celebrated her 92nd birthday.

Born in Haskell, Texas on September 27, 1914, she moved to Plainview in 1928. She graduated from Plainview High School in 1931 and earned an AA degree from Wayland Baptist College in 1933. She graduated from Texas Tech in 1935 with a degree in Chemistry. She was a member of Las Chaparritas Sorority and was elected Sweetheart of Texas Tech. After graduation she taught school in Lockney.

In 1935 she married Richard A. Morehead, also from Plainview, and moved with him to Fort Worth and then in 1940 to Austin. Richard had a long career as a journalist, writing for the Austin Bureau of the Dallas Morning News. Judith went to graduate school at the University of Texas, earned an MA in Science Education, and taught Chemistry at McCallum High School for 22 years.

Judith also served on the Board of Teachers College Examiners for the State of Texas, by appointment of the Governor. She was an active member of Delta Kappa Gamma, the professional society of teachers.

A lifelong Presbyterian, Judith was a member of The University Presbyterian Church in Austin. She was a also a member of the Daughters of The Republic of Texas, and a founding member of its Texian Chapter.

Judith and Richard lived for 48 years in the same house on East 32nd Street in Austin. In 1998 they moved to Westminster Manor where they made many new friends. Richard passed away on January 31, 2003. He and Judith had been married for 66 years and had been dating for seven years before they married.

Judith was preceded in death by her parents RR English and Lucile Hughes English; brothers Raul and Hugh English; and granddaughter Laura Chapin. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law Judith Morehead Chapin and Gordon R. Chapin of Lampasas; her son Richard Morehead, Jr. and his partner Kenneth Knight of Santa Fe; her grandson Curtis M. Chapin of Fort Worth and his wife Arlene Nutt Chapin; and by great grandsons Collin (11) and Jordan (5) Chapin.

A memorial service will be held for Judith this Saturday afternoon, November 18th, at 3:00 p.m. in the Chapel at Westminster Manor. Rev. San Williams of University Presbyterian Church will lead the service.
