TAYLOR, WILLIAM JOSEPH (1944 ~ 2009). The following is an obituary for William Joseph Taylor, former member of the Polygraph Examiners Board. The obituary was provided by Marrs-Jones-Newby Funeral Home of Bastrop.
William Joseph Taylor was born to George R. and Marguerite Taylor in Chicago, Illinois on September 7, 1944. Bill was raised in rural Bastrop County in a small community called Swiftex. He attended school in Bastrop and moved to Austin in the 9th grade graduating from McCallum High School in 1963. He served in the US Marine Corp Reserves from 1963-1971 and the U.S. Navy Reserve from 1972-1974. Bill began his career with the Department of Public Safety in 1966 as a recruit.
After graduation he saw duty as a highway patrolman in Lampasas, Burnet, Austin and Corrigan. In 1971 he became a polygraph examiner. During his tenure at D.P.S. he oversaw the statewide polygraph program. He received national recognition for professional excellence and professional contributions to the polygraph profession from the American Association of Police Polygraphists, a national association that he founded in 1976. He was also a member of the American Polygraph Association and founded The Texas Association of Law Enforcement Polygraph Investigators. In 1974 he was appointed by Dolph Briscoe to a term on the polygraph examiners board and was reappointed by subsequent governors until 1994 when he retired as a captain with the Texas Department of Public Safety.
Bill and his wife Sarah then moved to Bastrop where he was a member of the Mina Masonic Lodge #1456. He also belonged to the Scottish Rite, Valley of Austin and York Rite, Bodies of Austin.
Bill was predeceased by his parents and grandson Zach Kemper and is survived by his wife, Sarah, brothers John Taylor and Robert Taylor; children, Brettne’ (Alex), Whitney (Tom), Alan (Starla), Tamara (John), Amy, Charles (Kayle). He is also survived by 7 grandchildren, known to them as "Growl," whom he loved to take on mule rides, fishing and just showing the way to have fun on the farm.
Visitation will be Thursday, August 20th from 6-8pm at Marrs-Jones Newby Funeral Home in Bastrop. Funeral Service is on Friday, June 21st, at 10am at Marrs Jones Newby Funeral Home Chapel. Burial to follow at the Texas State Cemetery in Austin.
