BASS, FREDERICK SAMUEL (1829~1897) Born in Brunswick County, Virginia in June 1829, Bass was an 1851 graduate of the Virginia Military Institute. He later taught at a military school in Marshall, Texas and became Captain of Company E, 1st Texas on May 28, 1861. He was promoted to Major on September 7, 1862 and again to Lt. Colonel on July 15, 1864. Bass was wounded at Darbytown Road on October 7, 1864 but successfully recovered and went on to become President of Marshall University in Marshall, Texas. He died in Austin, Texas on July 9, 1897 and is buried at the Texas State Cemetery.
