Mason Douglas Harrell

HARRELL, MASON D. (1915 ~ 1996). The following is an obituary for Col. Mason D. Harrell, former member of the Texas House of Representatives. The obituary was published in the Salt Lake City Deseret News upon his death.  

Mason D. Harrell, 80, passed away May 14, 1996 in Sandy, Utah from cancer.

Born June 18, 1915 in Smithville, Texas to James Walker and Josephine Byerly Harrell. He was an Eagle Scout. He graduated from Smithville High School in 1933, attended the University of Texas from 1933 to 1936, then worked in Austin, Texas. He served as a member of the Texas House of Representatives, District 127, Texas Legislature 1939, representing Bastrop County. He volunteered for the Army Air Corps and graduated Flying Cadet Class 1941 - E. He served in the U.S. Air Force as a command pilot for 30 years and retired in 1968 as a full colonel.Mason married Dorothy Gledhill in 1942. He was an Elder in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.

He is survived by his wife and children: Judge Mason D. Harrell, Jr., Harris G. Harrell, Marjo Burdette, 16 grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, and a sister, Dolly D. Harrell. Preceded in death by his baby son, Albert Boyce Harrell.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday, May 17, 1996 at Oak Hill LDS Stake Center, 5201 Convict Hill Road, Oak Hill, Texas. Friends may call Thursday evening 6-8 p.m. at the Harrell Funeral Home, South Lamar and Ben White, 4435 Frontier Trail, Austin, Texas. Interment at the Texas State Cemetery at 7th and Comal, Austin, Texas.
