CRUMMEY, NANCY ELIZABETH ROMAS (1857~1943) Nancy Elizabeth Romas Crummey, Confederate widow, was born on December 4, 1857, in Cass County, Texas to W. G. and Malinda Romas. On September 6, 1874, at age 16, she married Confederate veteran William Ransom Logan Crummey in Cass County.
William and Nancy remained in Cass County and had ten children, though only eight appear to have lived to adulthood. Their names are: George Washington; Albert; Dora; Lillie Ozella; Pearl; Jeewell, James B.; and Jack.
While in Cass County, William successfully applied for a Confederate pension from the State of Texas. According to Nancy's application for a Confederate Widow's pension, William died on June 4, 1924, in Hooks, Bowie County. It is believed that the family moved there between 1920 and 1923.
After William's death, Nancy moved to Wichita Falls to live with her son, James, where in May of 1929, she successfully applied for a Confederate Widow's pension from the State of Texas. Suffering from poor eyesight and other debilities, she moved around quite a lot. She appeared to be dividing her time between her children in Oklahoma, Wichita Falls, Houston, and Abilene.
In September of 1942, Nancy went to live with her daughter, Pearl, in Abilene, but only stayed a few months, before she entered the Confederate Woman's Home in Austin on February 10, 1943. She remained in the Home until her death on August 2, 1943. She was buried in the Texas State Cemetery the next day.
