POLLARD, CLAUDE (1874-1942). Claude Pollard, lawyer, was born in Carthage, Texas, on February 14, 1874, the son of Hamilton and Sarah Jane (Davis) Pollard. He attended public schools in Carthage and taught for a time before studying law. He was admitted to the bar in 1895 and during the next fourteen years served as Panola county attorney (1895-98), United States district attorney (1900-05), and assistant attorney general of Texas (1905-09). He married Julia S. Newton on December 27, 1897; they had two children.
In 1909 Pollard moved to Kingsville; there he served as counsel for a railway company until 1916, when he went into private law practice. In Kingsville he was a leader in the movement that resulted in the organization of Kleberg County, with Kingsville as the county seat. He also served as regent of South Texas State Teachers College (now Texas A&I University) and was president of the State Bar of Texas in 1920. He defeated James Allred for attorney general in 1926 and was reelected in 1928. He resigned in September 1929, before the end of his second term, to become general counsel for the Railway General Managers‘ Association of Texas. Pollard died in Austin on November 25, 1942, and was buried in the State Cemetery.
