MENEFEE, MISSOURI OPHELIA SLOAN (1846~1941) Missouri Ophelia Sloan Menefee was born on September 7, 1846, in Limestone County, Alabama to Alfred Sloan and Margaret J. Harrison, both of Limestone County, Alabama. Missouri married William T. Menefee on November 17, 1870. Together, they had eight children, six of whom lived to adulthood: Mary Jane Menfee Liles Gibson, John Alfred, Jerry B., Charlie B., Thomas David, and Lillian Ophelia Menefee English.
During the Civil War, William served in Company E, of the 50th Alabama Infantry, in General Day's Brigade, of the Army of Tennessee. After the war, in 1881, Missouri and William settled in Littig, Travis County, Texas, where William worked as a farmer, wheelwright, and mechanic.
On May 13, 1918, unable to care for themselves, Missouri and William entered the Confederate Men‘s Home. Both lived at the Home until William‘s death on February 23, 1928. Upon her husband‘s death, Missouri was moved to the Confederate Women‘s Home, where she lived until her death on January 13, 1941. Missouri and William are buried together in the Texas State Cemetery.
