David Andrew McElwain was born on March 6, 1844 in Gaston County, North Carolina. This is listed on his Confederate Application for the Confederate pension and he is enumerated on the 1850 Gaston census at age six with the Jacob Ramsey family. According D. A. McElwains death certificate his parents were Calep McElwain and Mary Williams. His age at death was 93 years 5 months and 6 days on September 4, 1937 at 8:30 am after having lived at the Texas Confederate Home in Austin, Texas. for 8 years and 2 months.
David Andrew McElwain was a private in the 2nd Mississippi State Cavalry, C.S.A. He enlisted December 15, 1862 at Ripley, Mississippi. He was captured May 22, 1863 at Ripley and released June 11, 1865 at Ft. Delaware. He was married to Ann Darnell, date and place unknown. I do not know of any other children except my great-grandfather, Jesse Darnell McElwain. David was a farmer most of his life,and he came to Texas in 1872. He farmed in Henderson and Kaufman Counties. He lived with his grandaughter and her husband, Daisey McElwain Pfeiffer, in Kleberg county prior to residing at the Confederate Home. |
