CALLAWAY, WALTER P. (1854~1932)
Walter P. Callaway, Texas Ranger and Indian fighter, was born on November 14, 1854, in La Grange, Troup County, Georgia. After coming to Texas, Callaway served as the Captain of the No. 1 Minute Men Co., Kerr County, station Kerrville in 1873. He also served as a private in Company A Frontier Battalion of the Texas Rangers, where he fought the Comanche Indians under Captains Neal Caldwell and Jesse Leigh (Lee) Hall.
He enlisted in Austin, Texas in May 1876, and was discharged in April 1877, in Frio City. After serving as a Ranger, Callaway began working as a mine engineer and married Mattie Gilder Wright on March 18, 1879, at the First Baptist Church in Austin, Texas. Together, they had one daughter, whose name is not known, but she was born on January 18, 1900. In October 1927, Callaway reported in his request for a pension from the United States Government that he was totally blind in his right eye and near blind in his left and had lost of the use of his right arm. Callaway died in the Jefferson Davis Hospital in Houston, Texas on July 14, 1932, and was buried in the Texas State Cemetery that same day.
