BARFIELD, MARY JANE HUGHES (1847 ~ 1929). Mary Jane Hughes Barfield was born on September 19, 1847, in Mississippi to C. E. Hughes, from South Carolina, and Pauline Craig from Alabama. On March 25, 1865 she married Confederate veteran James H. Barfield in Kemper, Mississippi. Around 1887 they moved to Texas. James previously served in the Civil War in the 35th Mississippi Infantry for four years.

It is not known whether or not the Barfields had any children. They lived in Palestine, Texas until June 2, 1926, when they were both admitted to the Confederate Men's Home in Austin. R. L. Barfield of Lufkin, Texas is listed as a contact name in their records. After James' death on December 5, 1926, Mary moved to the Confederate Women's Home on December 16, of that same year. She lived there until her death on June 23, 1929 and was buried at the Texas State Cemetery the following day.
