MENEFEE, WILLIAM T. (1840~1928). William T. Menefee was born in October of 1840, to Isaac Alexander Menefee and Hepsabeth Buys, both of Athens, Limestone County, Alabama.
William married Missouri Ophelia Sloan on November 17, 1870, in Athens, Alabama. Together, they had eight children, six of whom lived to adulthood. They are: Mary Jane Menefee Liles Gibson, John Alfred Menefee, Jerry B. Menefee, Charlie B. Menefee, Thomas David Menefee, and Lillian Ophelia Menefee English.
William served as a private in Company E, in the 50th Alabama Infantry, in General Day's Brigade, in the Army of Tennessee. William was taken as a prisoner of war and was paroled on May 2, 1865, at Greensboro, North Carolina.
In 1881, William and Missouri moved to Texas and settled in Littig, Travis County, where William and most of his children lived out their lives. While living in Travis County, William worked as farmer, wheelwright, and mechanic. On May 13, 1918, William and Missouri were admitted to the Confederate Men's Home in Austin. William died of pneumonia on February 23, 1928. After his death, Missouri was moved to the Confederate Women's home, where she lived until her death on January 13, 1941.
William and Missouri and buried next to one another in the Texas State Cemetery.
