Leonidas Napoleon Bonaparte Lippard

LIPPARD, LEONIDAS NAPOLEON BONAPARTE (1845 ~ 1926). Leonidas Napoleon Bonaparte Lippard, Confederate veteran, was born on January 26, 1845, in Henry County, Tennessee to John Henry Lippard and Mary Martha Sharp. In 1856, Lippard and his family immigrated to Texas.

At age 18, Lippard joined the Confederacy. He first served in the Texas State Troops, but on July 25, 1864, his unit was consolidated with several others to form Bradford's Regiment, Texas Cavalry. Lippard served in Company F.

In late 1864, or early 1865, Bradford's Regiment was dismounted and converted to a dismounted unit and in January, 1865, was reorganized as Mann's Regiment, Texas Cavalry. The unit served in the defense of Galveston and surrendered on June 2, 1865.

After being paroled on June 26, 1865, in Millican, Texas, Lippard, who had been promoted to Corporal, married Nancy Ann Stockman Cook. Together, they had three children: Robert Zaccariah Lee, John Henry, and David Cook.

Lippard married for a second time on August 20, 1888 at Colbert's Ferry, Indian Territory, Oklahoma. He was 43 and his new wife, Allie Lee Harper, was 14. Together, they had ten children: Edmond J. Davis, Martha Ann, Spencer Sharp, Abraham Lincoln, Leonidas Bailey, Lucious Bonaparte, Josephine Kate Inez, Sarah Elnora, Alfonzo Steel, and Eugene Victor Debbs. Their first child was born sixteen months after his wedding to Allie. He fathered five children after the age of 55, one at 60, one at 64, and the last was born after he turned 67.

A peanut farmer, Lippard worked as long as he could. He eventually settled in Anson, Jones County, Texas, where on May 2, 1911, he applied for a Confederate Pension from the State of Texas.

Lippard and his young family moved to Rising Star, Eastland County. Suffering from the effects of age, he moved to Austin to live in the Confederate Men's Home. He was admitted on September 2, 1922, and remained there until his death on June 18, 1926. He was buried in the Texas State Cemetery two days later.
