| John W. Baty was born in 1844 in Indiana, at the age of 9 he moved to Texas. At 17 he joined the 6th Texas Cavalry Company B. Baty only served one year, and the reason for his discharge is not known though he was honorably discharged. In 1890 he moved to Hood County close to Granbury where he worked as a farmer until 1911 when he filed for a Soldier's Pension.
