SHILLING, JAMES FERDINAND (1846~1891) J. F. Shilling was born in 1846 in Virginia. By the age of 15, Shilling was working as a laborer for the Isaac H. Huff family in Floyd County, Virginia. On April 5, 1862, he enlisted as a private at Richmond, Virginia. Shilling fought in the 2nd Stuart Horse Artillery, he later was an ambulance driver. The 1st and 2nd Stuart Horse Artillery originally formed late in 1861, and was assigned to J.E.B. Stuart’s cavalry.

During the War, Shilling served under John Pelham. Pelham’s battery saw action in over sixty battles from Yorktown, 2nd Bull Run, Antietam, and Fredricksburg. Pelham’s battery was considered one of the best, Robert E. Lee commented, “It is glorious to see such courage in one so young.” Major Pelham was killed in the Battle of Kelly’s Ford on March 17, 1863, by an enemy shell.

Following the War, Shilling married Grace Greenwood Woodrum on September 12, 1870, and the couple had four children: Olive Cleora, June 18, 1871; Oscar Hutchins, October 25, 1874; Byron Wilmer, June 14, 1878; and Ferdinand J. Shilling, June 27, 1880. Shilling was admitted to the Confederate Men’s Home and died on February 7, 1891. James Ferdinand Shilling was buried at the Texas State Cemetery. Following his death, Grace Greenwood Woodrum Shilling married James Light and had child named California Gold Light. Grace Shilling Light died in 1944. In a letter, James F. Shilling was called, “one of the most conscientious men that I have ever met and was well beloved by all who knew him well.”
