ESTES, JOHN W. (1835 ~ 1924). John Estes was born in Arkansas in 1835. In 1850, he moved to Texas where he eventually resided in Gatesville. At the age of 27, on March 20, 1862, he mustered into the 16th Texas Infantry Company B at Camp Groce.
Estes rose through the ranks quickly by being appointed 3rd Corporal on May 4, 1862 and on October 15, 1862 was promoted to 3rd Sergeant. On May 31, 1863, the 16th was involved in a skirmish at Perkin's Landing in Louisiana. Estes also participated in the Battle of Milliken's Bend on June 7th where his regiment was positioned on the right flank. By September 1863 Estes had deserted on furlough, but he returned in January of 1864. The 16th participated in the Red River Campaign and the Camden Expedition March through May of 1864. On April 8, 1864 the regiment was engaged at the Battle of Mansfield and on April 9th was engaged at the Battle of Pleasant Hill, Louisiana. Estes' regiment was surrendered by General Edmund Kirby Smith on May 26, 1865.
After the war, Estes worked as a farmer. On January 9, 1912 he was admitted to the Confederate Men's Home and lived there until his death on September 17, 1924. He was survived by his son J.J. Estes.
