AKE, THOMAS JEFFERSON (1835~1923) Thomas Jefferson Ake, Confederate veteran, was born October 30, 1835, in Coffeeville, Mississippi to John Campbell and Sarah M. Ake. After moving with his family to Arkansas in 1838, Ake moved to Texas in 1856. According to his Compiled Military Service Record, Ake, on October 28, 1861, two days before his 26th birthday, joined the Confederacy at Camp Herbert, near Hempstead, Texas. He was mustered into Company I, 12th Texas Cavalry of the Trans Mississippi Army. No information is known of his experiences during the war.
After the War, Ake settled in San Saba, Texas, where he married Miss Leeley Earp on February 21, 1875. Together, they had seven children: Etta, Riley, Vollie, Ruby, Lillian, Tempie and Leslie. According to "Ake Family of America," by Ron Wise, T. J. Ake and Leeley separated in 1901. It is not know if they ever officially divorced. Leeley passed away on August 15, 1948, in Houston, Texas and is buried in Forest Park Lawndale Cemetery.
Ake worked as a farmer and lived in West Texas in the communities of Cherokee, Cold Creek, and Pontotoc. On October 25, 1923, Ake moved from Ponotoc, Mason County, Texas to the Confederate Men's Home in Austin, claiming old age as his disability. In all, he only lived in the Home for 8 days before he died on November 2. He was buried in the Texas State Cemetery the next day.
