WEIR, ROBERT MCEWEN (1841~1922) Robert McEwen Weir, Confederate veteran, was born in 1841 in Mississippi. After immigrating to Texas in 1852, he enlisted in the Confederacy in San Antonio on September 1, 1861.
He was mustered into Company G of the 8th Texas Cavalry, which was also known as Terry?s Texas Rangers. Apparently, after spending a year with Terry?s Regiment, Weir transferred, according to his military record, on September 16, 1862, to Company A of the 3rd Kentucky Cavalry.
While with the 3rd Kentucky Cavalry, Weir was captured at Green River Bridge, Kentucky. He was subsequently released at Fort Delaware, by making an Oath of Allegiance to the United States. Other than what is provided above, no other information is currently known about Weir?s participation in the Civil War.
After the end of the War, he returned to Texas and eventually settled in Belton, Bell County, where he worked as a farmer. Having never married and suffering from his military wounds, he moved into the Confederate Men?s Home in Austin on February 6, 1913.
After staying in the Home for a short time, Weir was discharged, at his own request, on March 31. He was readmitted twice more and eventually died at the Home on April 24, 1922. He was buried in the Texas State Cemetery the next day.
