CONNER, MATTIE ANN NANCE (1846 ~ 1919). Mattie Ann Nance Conner, Confederate widow of Jesse R. Conner, was born in Harrison County, Texas on January 22, 1846, to Gideon and Emily Smith Nance of North Carolina and Mississippi. Following the Civil War, Mattie Nance married Jesse R. Conner, a Confederate veteran, on September 21, 1868.

After her husband's death, Conner resided in The Cumberland Rest, a home for the aged in Fort Worth. Later she was moved to the Confederate Woman's Home in Austin on September 5, 1917.

On June 10, 1918, Conner was admitted to the Austin Lunatic Asylum, now called the Austin State Hospital, where she died on September 20, 1919. Her body was returned to the Confederate Woman's Home for burial at the Texas State Cemetery.

According to Asylum records, Conner had no children, but two women were to be notified of her death: a Mrs. Agnes Roberts of Walter, Oklahoma and a Mrs. James M. Sligar of Fort Worth.
