HARVEY, WANDA SLOAN (1921 ~ 2015). The following is an obituary for Wanda Sloan Harvey, spouse of Bill Harvey, former commissioner of the Texas Rehabilitation Commission. The obituary was provided by Weed - Corley - Fish Funeral Home.
Wanda Sloan Harvey departed this life peacefully at home with family by her side on May 17th, 2015 at age 93. Wanda was born October 18, 1921 in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. Her family moved to Texas and she spent most of her childhood and all of her adult life in the Houston area.
She graduated from Sam Houston High School. After graduation she attended a Secretarial School until she discovered she didn't like to type. She then worked in the mail room at The Historic Rice Hotel in Houston where she met many celebrities until she started her career in insurance. She was one of the first female commercial insurance underwriters retiring from USF&G in 1978.
She met the love of her life, Bill "WK" Harvey, Jr. at a dance in Houston. She married Bill April 5th, 1942. They had 71 wonderful years of marriage before his passing in 2013.
Wanda was preceded in death by her father Clarence Sloan; her mother Helen Sloan; stepmother Nancy Sloan; brother Buddy Sloan; sisters Velda Jones and June Eggleston.
She is survived by her sister Judith Sloan of Kingwood, Texas, her nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews and many friends.
A graveside service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, May 20, 2015 at Texas State Cemetery in Austin.
