ALLEN, ELISHA POE (1843~1917) Elisha Poe Allen, Confederate veteran, was born on March 14, 1843, in San Augustine County, Texas to Jesse J. and Eliza Jane Shipp Allen. By age 5, Allen and his family moved to Anderson County, Texas, where his mother, Eliza Jane, died.
When the Civil War broke out, Allen enlisted as a Private in Company F of the 13th Texas Infantry. Later, he served as a private in Company D of the 13th Texas Cavalry. According to his military records, companies F, K and M, on April 3, 1862, were transferred to the 15th Regiment of the Texas Infantry. Apparently, not wanting to change regiments, Allen, on May 10, 1862, enlisted in Company D of the 13th Texas Cavalry, which he served with until May 8, 1865.
After the War, Allen returned home to Anderson County, where on August 7, 1865, he married Mary Pernettie Shaver, the daughter of William Jasper and Pernettie Allen Shaver. Together, they had two children, Mary Pernettie Eliza Jane and Albert Alease. Allen's wife, Mary, died in Anderson County on March 14, 1879.
Allen was a farmer up until the time he could no longer work. Complaining of old age and general disabilities, he, at age 62, applied for a Confederate Pension from the State of Texas.
After living with his son, Albert, in Grapeland, Texas, Allen moved into the Confederate Men's Home in Austin on October 8, 1917. After living in the Home for just over a month, he passed away on November 21, 1917.
