Friends and family members of M.A. Taylor Jr. remembered him Tuesday as a trailblazer in local Republican politics who stood up for what he believed in regardless of how it played politically.

Taylor, 85, died at Waco’s Providence Health Center early Tuesday after a lengthy hospitalization. He represented McLennan and Falls counties in the Texas House of Representatives from 1985 to 1993. He then served as McLennan County Republican Party chairman for 14 years, retiring in 2009.

Former state Sen. David Sibley, who also represented Waco, said Taylor helped pave the way for the GOP to become the majority party here.
