COPELAND, J. A. "Joseph"(1837 ~ 1914)Confederate private J. A. "Joseph" Copeland was born in May 22, 1837 in Georgia. His exact birthplace is unknown at this time.
Copeland came to Texas in 1850, settling in Hearne where he worked as a farmer. On May 24, 1861, he joined the Confederate Army at Corinth, Mississippi where he was assigned to Company A of the 18th Mississippi Infantry.
On April 26th, 1862, Copeland and his Company were reorganized, becoming Captain Jayne's Rifle Company of the 18th Regiment, Mississippi Infantry. Copeland was a part of the Army for four years before surrendering along with General Lee and the Northern Virginia Army at Appomattox, Virginia on April 9, 1865.
Copeland returned to Texas after the Civil War and was admitted to the Confederate Men's Home in Austin May 16, 1910. He died July 9, 1914 and was buried in the Texas State Cemetery July 11, 1914. |
