MOORE, EDWARD (1833-1911)- Edward Moore was born in Alabama in 1833. At the start of the Civil War, he joined the 8th Alabama Infantry, Co. E as a private. He later was promoted to sergeant.
The 8th Alambama Infantry was organized by the war department as Alabama's first division to go and fight for the war. The infantry was first under the brigade of Gen. Pryor, until the skirmish at Seven Pines, where Gen. Wilcox took command.
The infantry fought in many battles: Mechanicsville, the assault on Longstreet's division, Gaine's Mill, Frazier's Farm, a skirmish with Meagher's Irish Brigade, the second battle of Manassas, the capture of Harper's Ferry, Sharpsburg, Fredericksburg, Salem Church and Gettysburg; where Edward Moore was wounded by gunshot.
It is not known if Edward Moore continued to fight in the war after Gettysburg. If so, he may have continued to fight with the 8th Infantry in the Battle of the Wilderness, Cold Harbor, Petersburg, the raid on Weldon Railroad, the capture of the "Crater" and Deep Bottom.
Edward Moore came to Texas in 1874 and resided in Victoria County where he worked as a farmer. There is no evidence of him being married.
On June 10, 1910, Edward Moore was admitted to the Confederate Mens Home, where he died of arterio sclerosis, on May 10, 1911. He was interred at the Texas State Cemetery the following day.
