SMALL, JOHN B. (1828 ~ 1908). Confederate veteran John B. Small was born in Kentucky in 1828. Small moved to Texas in 1854 and lived in West, McLennan County where he was a member of the Baptist Church.

During the Civil War he served in Company G, 5th Texas Infantry, Hood's Brigade in the Army of Northern Virginia. The 5th was organized in October of 1861.

The 5th participated in many important battles including 2nd Bull Run, Antietam, Fredericksburg, Gettysburg, Chickamauga, and the Petersburg Siege. The 5th surrendered at Appomattox Court House, Virginia on April 9, 1865 under General Robert E. Lee.

Small was a single carpenter before he was admitted to the Confederate Men's Home on December 23, 1897. He died at the Home on August 20, 1908.
