NUGENT, JAMES E. (1922 ~ 2016). The following is an obituary for Jim Nugent, former member of the Texas house of Representatives and Texas Railroad Commissioner. The obituary was provided by Weed, Corley Fish Funeral Home of Austin.
James E. "Jim" Nugent, 94, of Austin, died peacefully July 17, 2016, at his residence. Born June 24, 1922 in San Angelo, the son of Edward and Ada Bell Patterson Nugent. Graduated from Schreiner College in 1941. Received his mechanical engineering and law degrees from U.T. Austin.
His life was a life of Service. Immediately after graduating from U.T., he became Kerr County attorney where he served until 1954. He also practiced law in Kerrville, was a member of the Texas House of Representatives from 1961 until 1979. Served as Speaker Pro Tem from 1977 until leaving the legislature. Elected to the Texas Railroad Commission in 1979, and served there until 1995. United States Navy Veteran, serving as a pilot. Flying was always his passion. Member of Rotary International and numerous Bar Associations.
Survivors include daughter Nan Nugent-White and husband Jeff, stepson Cal "Skip" Trammell and wife Nedra. Also survived by grandchildren Joe Cotten, IV, Walker White, Logan White, Trey Trammell, and Cristi Trammell, and great-grandchildren Brooklyn Cotten, Brittnee Carlton, Tyler Trammell, and Shayde Trammell. Predeceased by parents and sister Noreen Steves.
Graveside service at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 23rd, at Texas State Cemetery in Austin.
