LINDSEY, FRANCES LILLIAN DAVENPORT (1923 ~ 2012). The following is an obituary for Frances "Fran" Lindsey, spouse of former state official James Luther Lindsey. The obituary was provided by Lindsey's daughter Lorinda Hughes.

Frances Lillian (Fran) Lindsey, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, and friend to all, was born July 6, 1923 in Bellevue, Texas to Marvin and Lallie Davenport. She was the second of five children, all girls. She claimed to have been one of two tomboys in the bunch. Hard to believe because she always had perfect attire.

Fran met her husband, James Luther Lindsey, at Sheppard Air Force Base in Wichita Falls, TX. They were married on September 13, 1944 and cherished nearly 60 years of marriage until his passing on April 27, 2004. He called her “his bride.” She followed him through his illustrious career in journalism and at one time worked as the Office Manager at the “Hill Country News.”

Fran passed away on April 10, 2012 at the age of 88. She is survived by four daughters; Pam Bonner, Debbie Melton, Sherry Lindsey and Lorinda Hughes. She was grandmother (Nannie, Ninni) to seven grandchildren and six great grandchildren.

Fran loved the game of golf. She started her golfing career when she was in her early sixties, to help a friend through the grief of losing her husband. She thought getting her friend back on the golf course would help her back into the stream of life. Unfortunately, Fran did not have any golf clubs, but her friend’s husband’s clubs were sitting in the garage not being used. Nothing stopped Fran’s Irish determination. She figured out how to adapt with men’s clubs by standing a little further back from the ball. Her golf career continued to grow. Fran was the third president of the LGA in 1989, LGA Champion Runner Up in 1991 and LGA Honoree in 2003 at Berry Creek Country Club in Georgetown, Texas. She played in the Pro-Am; the golf pro at Great Hills Country Club in Austin, took her to a tournament. She had numerous awards through golf affiliations and played until the age of 85. She was a great mentor to many in life as well as on the golf course.

Fran’s greatest joy was her family and her church. She was a member of Faith Lutheran Church until moving to Pecos to be with her youngest daughter. Fran’s words of wisdom: “Trust in the Lord and follow what he gives you.” Each morning she would start her day reading the bible. Her faith carried her through life’s journey and she is in the loving hands of God.

Any memorial contributions may be made to the Berry Creek Cancer Fund in Memory of Fran Lindsey and mailed to 30214 Sawgrass Trail, Georgetown, TX 78628.

Obituary contributed by Lorinda Hughes.
