AWBREY, THOMAS JEFFERSON (1835 ~ 1925). Thomas Awbrey, Indian Wars and Confederate veteran, was born in Missouri in 1835 to Thomas Nolan and Amelia Ann Awbrey. He was part of Company F of the 14th Dismounted Cavalry, also known as Johnsons Mounted Volunteers. He belonged to Ector's Brigade, French's Division, Army of Tennessee. He enlisted in the Confederate Army January 8, 1862 in Montague County. His company took part in the siege of Jackson, battles of Chickamauga, Peach Tree Creek, and Franklin. Awbrey entered the Civil War as a private, but by war's end he was a 2nd Lieutenant. He appeared on a list of absent officers dated August 11, 1864, and signed the parole of honor at Jackson, Mississippi, May 28, 1865.
Before the Civil War, Awbrey served in the Indian Wars in Oregon and received a pension of 20 dollars each month from the government for his service. It is also believed that he married an Evaline Mann in Lane, Oregon March 28, 1858. A year later, Awbrey came to Texas; records do not indicate if his wife came with him and there are no records of them having children.
After the Civil War, Awbrey made Burleson County his home. He was a farmer there, and it appears he married a Julia Ann Mullinax at Cooks Point, Burleson County, on December 3, 1872. The 1880 U.S. Census reports that they had three children, Kate, Thomas, and John.
There are records that show a bit of confusion on whether Thomas Aubrey should have received both a pension for the Indian Wars and his Confederate service. At one point his Confederate Pension was taken away, and it's uncertain if it was reinstated, though there are letters from his attorney requesting so.
When Thomas Aubrey entered the Confederate Men's Home on May 6, 1923, his home roster listed him as being married and that his occupation was a Geologist. His immediate past residence before entering the home was Harrisburg, Texas. And his only listed correspondence was to be with a Mildred Moore is Harrisburg/Manning, Texas, their relationship is not known. When Thomas Aubrey died August 11, 1925 he was a widower, according to his death certificate. He was buried in the Texas State Cemetery the next day.
